"My first fascination was the Mute Swans that nested in the estate near our flat. I thought they were beautiful, until the day I crossed the barrier. Defending their young, they became most aggressive. I stood well back the following visits, which have been many since that day." - Berdina "My interest started in my grandfather's workshop. Every summer he would build nestboxes which he gave to his neighbours. He has passed but the boxes are everywhere throughout the village." - Carolyn "We have a large, typically English garden. I am sure it is centuries old. Everyone contibutes to the upkeep. My interest started with the Blue Tits who were residents. One landed on my shoulder. Our family property is my favorite place in the world." - Dawn "A study term in Antarctica brought me and my camera to an intensely personal encounter with Emperor Penguins. Really a lovely experience that I shall never forget. Found patience and a curiosity to observe all, especially waterfowl. A visit to Canada "When we lived in Valleyfield, PQ my dad won a feeder and a big bag of seed in a contest. He hung it on a tree but the squirrels kept knocking it down. Then he moved it close to the windows. I know I was hooked the day a Blue Jay and a Cardinal were there the same time. My allowance was raised so I could afford the seed. We have 11 feeders surrounding the house. I have been feeding all the species that visit my house." - Karon "My godparents gave me a set of nature books when I entered Primary School. I noticed that the birds sang from the trees in the park where we played. I also noticed the art in the books were not true to what I saw in the trees. Some of my earliest drawings were attempts to sketch and colour the birds in their environment. When out, I attempt to make the perfect exposure with my camera, to show how they appear as I see them with my eyes. - Eden "I jumped into this interest after viewing a television series, The Life of Birds, presented by David Attenborough. My life was changed insomuch that birds are the theme for my thesis. Record keeping is key to my research. I have made close friends through my interest and find all recreational travel is planned with birdwatching in mind. I love a good spot! Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada is next on my list." - Meg |
