Village Feast

The Village Feast is a community-based, volunteer initiative created in Souris, PEI.

The concept is a fundraiser to assist people with needs locally and globally. The word village refers to the intimacy of the local communities we all belong to and the global village we are all connected to. Feast is a celebration of abundance and sharing which reflects our view of the world. We think we should be happy and fulfilled in helping those in need. We think the best way to celebrate abundance is to host a fundraising Feast that raises funds to enable people in need to share in abundance. The Village Feast raises money but it does not do program implementation. All of the funds raised go to organizations to do projects for people in need. It is people helping people help people.

The Village Feasts' inaugural event was a big community grilling event, with a target to raise net proceeds of $15,000.
$10,000 will go to Farmers helping Farmers to construct and equip a school cookhouse in Kenya which will feed 400 children daily.
$5, 000 will go to local charities to provide holiday dinners to over 100 local families at Easter and Thanksgiving and winter clothing for kids in need. Farmers helping Farmers will manage all of the funds.
Any excess funds over the first $15,000 will be held in a reserve fund to a maximum of $15,000 to cover the potential start up costs or shortfall, (rain out etc.) in following years.
Any excess funds above the reserve amount will be further donated that year to charities decided upon by the Committee.

Why Farmers helping Farmers?

FhF is a PEI organization engaged in assisting development in the global village. Their current focus is in farm, food and water projects in Kenya.
Local people can participate in the construction of the actual FhF project by traveling to Kenya and getting hands- on involved.
FhF has an education program to inform PEI students about FhF projects and the role of the local community in assisting communities in Africa.
Every FhF participant who travels to Kenya leverages the trip by transporting a suitcase of donated medicines to the site country and returning with a suitcase of art objects, which are in turn, sold to raise more money for FhF. This is the inception of Artists helping Artists. Village Feast plans to sell African crafts at the event to raise further money for Artists helping Artists.

Which local Charities?

Our community does a great job at Christmas of supporting approximately 100 families in need. These same families also need support for Easter and Thanksgiving.

The Village Feast aims to fill that gap by providing families in need with Feast meals sent to the local Food Bank on those holidays. Also, there is a great need to supply adequate winter clothing to some local children. The Village Feast targets $5000 to address these issues and will be donating money to local support organizations to meet this need.

Chef Michael Smith

Chef Michael Smith is the lead Chef for the licensed event. MacPhee's Market Chef Pedro Peirara and a host of volunteers join the grill team.

The menu in 2009 featured Chef Greg Aitken's Seafood Chowder, AAA strip loin steak, shiitake mushroom sauce, brown butter mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables and strawberry/rhubarb nutmeg cream shortcake topped with real whipped cream.

In 2009 were appearances by the British Car Club, Red Clay Quilters, local artisans with their crafts, Kenyan artwork for sale, Duke Ferguson's Unleased Potential K-9 Dog Show and master of ceremonies Mark Haines with a great line up of local entertainment. These have been added for your browsing and entertainment pleasure.

Proceeds from this event will go to Souris Food Bank for Holiday meals, Coats for Kids and Farmers Helping Farmers, to build a school cookhouse in Kenya.
