| Welcome to the 2004 Eglington-Bay Fortune School Reunion Memories PageDear friends, My name is Gertie Coffin. My home is in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. In 1955 I married Alva Coffin from Bay Fortune, P.E.I. In 1968, we purchased the former Eglington-Bay-Fortune one-room schoolhouse, and transformed it into a summer home for our family and friends. Alva was one of many who received his elementary education here. I have wonderful memories of many happy hours spent in this beautiful, peaceful location. We have often thought of the students who started the life journeys in this building and the teachers who helped them along the way. Over the years we have been pleased to see people stop, have a chat and take photos of the building, for either themselves or someone in the family received their early education here. In April 2002, my husband passed away and was interred in the Bay Fortune United Church Cemetery, just a few hundred yards to north of our property. As a tribute to Alva and all former students, I extended an invitation to all the students, teachers and their descendants, to attend a reunion. It was held August 6, 7, 8 2004 at the Bay Fortune Hall and on the grounds of the former Eglington-Bay Fortune school property. All proceeds over and above expenses incurred were presented to the Bay Fortune United Church Cemetery Fund, to help maintain the grounds in memory of the many students who lie there. Gertie Coffin Port Hawksbury, N.S. and Eglington, P.E.I. This story appeared in theEastern Graphic Wednesday, September 25, 2002 The EGLINGTON-BAY FORTUNE School has been in private hands for the past 34 years, but over the years former students and teachers continued to stop and share stories with the owners, Gertie Coffin (left) and her husband Alva. As a tribute to his memory, Ms. Coffin has decided to host a school reunion in the summer of 2004 for anyone who has a connection to the old schoolhouse that she has called home every summer for the past 34 years. Her committee consists of Marjorie Robertson, Fulton Underhay, (not in photo) Joyce Dixon and Jessie Noyes. Photo by Beverley RoachThe Search is on for former Eglington-Bay Fortune students Beverley Roach Graphic Staff Prior to 1967, rural one-room schoolhouses dotted the countryside and many of them have given a second life as community centres or summer cottages. One such school belongs to Gertie Coffin, who along with her husband spent the past 34 summers in the former Eglington-Bay Fortune School. "At least once a year a former student or teacher would stop for a chat and take some pictures and tell us wonderful stories," Ms. Coffin said. "Over the years we'd talk about having a school reunion but it never happened. This fall, a woman stopped and something said triggered the idea and I decided right then that I would do this in memory of my husband Alva, who passed away in April." Within days of making the decision, Ms. Coffin has a committee in place and a date set for the first Eglington-Bay Fortune School Reunion that will be held August 6, 7 and 8, 2004. Former students, teachers, and descendants of either students or teachers are invited to attend. "We are having such fun organizing this event," Ms. Coffin said. "From a personal point of view, it's given me something to get out of bed for each morning, but it's also reunited a lot of people already. Obviously now is the right time to do this." The committee consists of project coordinator Ms. Coffin; Marjorie Robertson, a former teacher, chair of the History committee; Joyce Dixon, also a former teacher, chair of the Craft Committee; Jessie Noyes, chair of the Quilt Committee and Fulton Underhay, a former student, chair of the Genealogy Committee. Waldron and Susan Leard from the History Room in Kingsboro will be assisting them establish a web page that will help track and link former students and teachers. "We're very excited about the web page," Ms. Coffin said. "We are so curious to find out where these people went after starting their life's journey at this little one-room school in rural PEI."
