Introduction . . .

The community of Goose River is situated on Roure 16A. It is named for the Goose River, which flows north into the Gulf of St. Lawrence and is in Lot 42. It is only about 2,000 feet long, but fed by a spring. It is shown correctly in 1880 but incorrectly applied to the McAskill River on a map generated in 1967.

The McAskill River flows north into Gulf of St. Lawrence, from Lot 42. It appears on maps in 1863 and 1880. In 1831, it was known as McCaskil's River. In 1967 it was known incorrectly as Goose River, given because it was assumed the local community of Goose River must be named for this, the longest stream in the area. The name was reverted in 1970 to reflect local usage.

A brief history . . .

O'Hanley's Lobster Factory was situated on the McAskill River. It included a cookhouse with sleeping quarters attached to it. The business employed 20-25 employees and the fleet included five to six boats. The factory closed in the 1930's.

MacKinnon's Lobster Factory was located in Goose River. They employed 30 people and shipped their finished product to Charlottetown, until it was sold in 1935. The factory closed for good in 1940.
