Introduction . . .

Bridgetown is 14 miles south-west of Souris on Route 3 and is in Lots 54 and 55. It was named ca. 1860 when a bridge was built across Boughton River. The village was formerly known as Grand River.

The Boughton River flows S/E into Boughton Bay. It was named by Samuel Holland 1765. The area was commonly called Grand River, which is on Holland's map of 1781. In Mik' Maq, the river was known as Weibooktoojech, interpreted as "little red river" or "little grassy woods".

A brief history . . .

The first recorded settlers included the Clay and Saville families. Capt. Edward saville sailed his schooner Blue Rock, the first to come up the Boughton River to Bridgetown in 1850. The shipbuilding industry brought families with the surnames of Mackay, Morrison and Ward to the community.

The original post office was entitled Head of Grand River, East from 1856 until 1863. Bridgetown had its own post office from 1896 until 1926.
