Newspapers & The Media

There have been a number of newspapers come and go in Souris, serving Eastern P.E.I. over the years. They included The Eastern Advocate, The Eastern Reporter, The Prince Edward Island Times, The Telephone and The Times. Author Wallace MacLean published a few issue of two newspapers; Souris News and The Satellite. Unfortunately he died young in 1897, of tuberculosis. Many associated with the area have written for the printed media here on the Island, and away. They include Edward Clinton, Alan Indge, Waldron Leard, Richard Lyons, Jerry MacCormack, Bev Roach, Sara Roach-Lewis and Nancy Willis among many others. Others have worked in other forms of the media such as radio and television. They include Murray Creed, Darrin Foulkes, Jean (MacGregor) Hender, Jennifer Keenan, Waldron Leard, Heather MacAulay, Connie MacDonald, L. Art MacDonald, Mary Catherine McIntosh, Mary Margaret (McIntosh) MacIntyre, Joanne MacKenzie, Andrea MacNevin, Ralph Marvin, Gretha Rose and Chef Michael Smith.

The Beacon was Souris' longest running newspaper. The first issue was delivered on August 18, 1992, under the direction of founding publisher Alan MacPhee. The "good news" newspaper served Eastern Kings consistantly until June 2, 2000, with a total of 187 issues. A staff member, Cherie MacCormack took over the duties of writer, editor and publisher, with the guidance of a locally based Editorial Board. Shortly afterwards, Cherie and her husband Brendon purchased the paper and also ran a popular office service. Sadly she took ill and passed away leaving her husband and business partner Brendon (1970-2008), three small children, a large extended family and host of friends. She was heavily involved in the community and was well known as a soccer administrator, coach and player. Brendon, too a sports volunteer, passed away suddenly in June 2008.
