PEI, this immigrant Isle is my home This year Souris, a proud town in PE.I. is celebrating its 100th anniversary of incorporation on November 14, The town has struggled through lows but has celebrated many highs through the century. Considering conditions in other parts of the world, we have it very good here. When I read the line regarding the people – it shows the combination of our citizens that kept Souris alive and regardless what people think – it does thrive. To often we do not celebrate our accomplishments. We are miserable at self-promotion. We have thousands in our region that contribute. This column and indeed perhaps the newspaper as a whole, does not have the space for everyone I can think of, past and present. The list below merely skims the surface. So Happy Canada Day to: Beautification volunteers including Boneta, Carmella, Joanne, Louise, Marcy, Nancy and Thelma. Chefs, cooks and servers who prepare our meals including Anne-Marie, Ed, Jackie, Lela, Marie, Megan, Michael, Pamela, Selma and Sarah. Community Halls volunteers including such as Charlie, Charles, Joe, Margie, Peter, Sandra, Robert and Wanda. Entertainers who give us smiles including: Alexander, Chad, Frank, Joe, Nick, Pat, Tim Tommy, and Tyson. EMS attendants such as Cameron, Eldon Katie, Matt, Preston and Wilfred. Event coordinators and supporters such as Angela, Chrissy, Emberlee, Elmer, Emery, J.J., Koady, Kendyle, Marlene and Ray. Fire-fighters such as Brian, Colin, Danny, Donnie, Jimmy, Sterling, Tony, and Wayne. Folks that work daily to make a difference such as Danny, Earl, Helen Marilyn and Mercy. Health care workers including Ambrose, Francis, Jeff, Karen, Kim, Sherry and Shirley. Seniors who live on to be an inspiration including Ardyce, Charlie, Clarisse, Helen, Jim, Neil, Roland and Stewart. Souris Lamplighter Club executive members Carmel, Dan, Justin and Sherry. Spiritual leaders including Alan, Beth, Doug, Fathers Doug and Paul. Sport officials such as David, Kent, Paul, Randy, Roger and Rollie. Stream enhancement workers such as Barry, Fred, Like, Michael, Paula, Robbie and Tim. Teachers and support staff – past and present, such as David, Judy, Kenny, Len, Lloyd, Lynne, Ronnie, Shane, Tara and Vicki. And finally those who volunteer to assist us to remember the volunteers whose valiant efforts and sacrifice allow us to have the freedoms in our town, our province and country; They include Claire, David, Gordon, Jazz, John, Joyce and Syl. As we sing and hum along O Canada tomorrow, take the time to think of the goodness of out country and all that have to show now and will have in the future! Thank-you all!
