Introduction . . .St. Catherines is located east of Souris in
Lots 45 and 46. It appears on an 1844 map. Greenvale is situated northeast of Souris in
Lot 46. The area was named by Daniel Mooney in 1842, who had immigrated from County Antrim, Ireland in 1821. There was a post office situated here from 1894 to 1914.
A brief history . . .
Donald MacDonald, one of the last year-round residents in Greenvale, moved to Souris in 1956. During his last winter there, the mail did not get through for 67 days. Around the turn of the century it was a booming community with 23 families who had their own post office and school. The last family moved themselves and their home to Little Harbour around 1970.
