![]() This was a brief article written by Francis J. Campbell and published in the March 2, 1993 edition of The Beacon. In 1917, my father, William F. Campbell cul down a tree in the Souris Line Road woods. It was about two feel on the stump topped off at 10 inches at 85 feet. It was hauled out by Andrew Maclnnis and loaded on a flal car al Harmony Junclion, lhen sent to Cardigan to John A, MacDonald Shipbuilders. The log was used for the keel of the ship he was building at the time. She would be named the Victory Chimes. On her maiden voyage, she was loaded with provisions for Newfoundland. In a fierce storm, she was wrecked on the Newfoundland coast. No one was lost but they had a very hard climb up the slippery cliffs in the darkness of night. It was said afterwards that if they knew how slippery and rocky it was, they would not have attempted it. So they all survived including Mr. MacDonald. Copyright Waldron H. Leard |
