Introduction . . .This community is situated west of Souris on Route 2 between Fortune Bridge, Rollo Bay West and Dingwells Mills. Locally it was known as the Fortune Road. The Fortune River flows to the south and empties into Rollo Bay and the Northumberland Strait in
Lot 43. The name is derived from riviere a la Fortune, possibly meaning
river of riches. It appears as Riviere a la Fortune on the Sieur de la Roque census of 1752. Sieur Laborde bought the ship
Fortune from the English in 1754.
A brief history . . .
Barnard Wilt's furniture factory was in full operation on the Line of the Lot Road by 1864, manufacturing chairs and stools. In the spring loads traveled to Souris by the wagon load, selling to local merchants for 60 and 70 cents, then retailing for $1.00. Wilt chairs were typical of Eastern Kings production with more being shipped to Boston than Summerside.
