Introduction . . .

Rollo Bay is situated ajacent to Northumberland Strait in Lots 43 and 44. It was named by Surveyor-General Samuel Holland for Andrew, the 5th. Lord Rollo (1700-1765) who captured P.E.I. from the French and supervised their deportation in 1758, and later distinguished himself in the capture of Canada and in fighting in the West Indies. It appears in 1752 as Havre a Mathieu. Pichon named the area anse a Matieu. Mathieu Turin had a family of ten near East Point in 1752. He had settled there in 1719. This area is situated west of Souris and south of Rollo Bay. There was a post office here from 1888 until 1904. Then it was known as the Rollo Bay East post office from 1904 to 1914. When the name of the post office was changed in 1904 the postmaster reported that "Lower Rollo Bay is done away with, belongs to ancient history, an anachronism so to speak". The old name continues a century later.

A brief history . . .

French and Acadian settlers along the Fortune River were forced to relocate to Lower Rollo Bay in 1801. Several of the families chose to leave for Cape Breton and were among the founders of Cheticamp.

John Deagle built his first two vessels here in 1808 - the Nancy and the Success.

Six men drowned at Rollo Bay on June 9, 1845 when a sudden storm capsizes their fishing craft.

C. C. Carlton & Son were among the earliest to start a lobster factory in the Souris area in 1876. The factory situated in the Cove, under James A. McRae manager, also canned beef for the London market.
