Introduction . . .

Howe Bay is situated southwest of Souris, ajacent to Northumberland Strait in Lots 43 and 56. It was named by Surveyor General Samuel Holland in 1765, probably for Sir William Howe (1729-1814, Commander in Chief in America in 1755, and commander of the light infantry at Quebec in 1759. Holland served under him. Locally it as been known as Durrell Cove. Sailor's Hope in Lot 56, was named for the residence of William Cooper who led the fight to end the proprietory system in the 1800's.

A brief history . . .

Interesting individuals associated with the community . . .

Cooper

William Cooper was born in Lochee, Dundee, Scotland in 1786. He was a Land Agent for Lord Townshend, a Miller, a Shipbuilder and a Businessman. He was elected to the P.E.I. Colonial Assembly. In his first election, he came close to losing his life on July 20, 1831, at the St. Peter's poll. He was forced to hide in a hayloft from rioters. In his first Assembly speech in 1832, he spoke out against the proprietors and becams immensely popular among the tenants. He was a leader of the Escheat movement which represented the tenantry against the landlords, many of whom did not live here. He later served as Speaker of the House of Assembly. His efforts helped give us Reponsible Government on our Island. He died at Sailor's Hope in 1867. Harry Baglole wrote an article for the Island Magazine, entitled William Cooper of Sailor's Hope. Robert A. Stead was born in Howe Bay. He taught Biology and Mathmatics at a High School level, then he joined the faculty of Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown. Later he became the Director of Admissions and Student Assistance at Acadia University. He also served on many committees involving assistance to students throughout Nova Scotia. He was elected Councillor and later Mayor of Wolfville, Nova Scotia.
