Introduction . . .Red House is situated west of Souris in
Lot 56. It is named for a house built by Edward Abell, the land agent for the area. It was painted red by a Mr. Heal, a notorious coroner who had condemned a man, who had committed suicide, to be buried opposite the house at the crossroads with a stake driven through his body. The Bay Fortune Post office was physically situated here from 1827 to 1880.
A brief history . . .
Tenant Patrick Pearce stabbed grasping land agent Edward Abell with a bayonet on August 24, 1819. Abell died at his home on August 28, after making his will on the 26th. Pearce is hidden by his neighbours until he can make good his escape the following spring on a vessel which sailed from Annandale.
