Introduction . . .
St. Charles is situated northwest of Souris in Lots 42 and 56. The community is named for the Catholic Church that is there. It was formerly called Groshaut Settlement. The 1880 Atlas shows Grosheaut Road. The post office was entitled Mansfield from 1886 until 1904 and then St. Charles from 1904 until 1914. New Acadia is in Lot 43. It was named by Eusebius Peters ca. 1885 for his Acadian forebears. The New Acadie post office served from 1889 until 1914.
A brief history . . .
The Great Eastern Tea Party in aid of St. Charles Church was held on August 13, 1901 at Gros Haut. Several casks of cider fermented and many of the attendees became drunk. The events of the day were turned into verse by Lawrence Doyle of Farmington and is now a popular song, The Picnic at Groshaut.
Interesting individuals associated with the community . . .
The cartoonist "Seth" has his ancestry in St. Charles. His father, John Gallant, wrote the history of his early life in Bannock Beans and Black Tea.
Recording artist Maxine MacLeod, who was nominated for three E.C.M.A. Awards in the 1990's, has her roots here among the Gallant's of St. Charles. She attended the first few years of school in the old two-room school. At the peak of her career, she was affectionately described as the hardest working musician in Atlantic Canada.
Michael Theriault, the stage and television actor who portrayed Tommy Douglas in the C.B.C. mini-series, has his roots amongst the Doiron's of St. Charles.
