The old Monticello school was built in 1840, in what was then Big Cape. It has been the focal point of the community ever since. Not only was it responsible for the early education of Monticello's residents - past and present, it was also what brought the neighbours together as friends. Today it helps keep the area a close-knit community. It was the feeling of family that prompted Theresa Wilson and Jenny McQuaid, former students, to form Bridget and Cecily to join with the entire Monticello community when the existence of the old school was threatened. By 1980, the building had decayed badly. The owner at the time was prepared to burn it down. The community decided to salvage their old memories and create some new ones.
Successful fundraisers including tea parties, lobster suppers, pony rides, bingos etc. saw the purchase of the building and property in 1982 and it was restored to its orginal appearance. The building continues to be used today for bingos, card plays and ceilidhs.
