The Acadian Bell

logo

Jerald Barry struck a heavy object while working a field on his property at St. Peter's Harbour on August 9, 1870. It turned out to be the bell from the St-Pierre-du-Nord Church that was buried by the French inhabitants before they were deported by British troops in 1758. The bell was given to the Rollo Bay Parish in 1882 in recognition of the many parishioners who had French and Acadian roots.

The bell has the following inscription:

The English translation states;
"P. Cossee made me - Mechlin 1723. In 1870, I was retrieved
from the ruins of a church of an old Acadian village, P.E.I. In
1882, the parishioners of Rollo Bay had me recast by Meneely and
Co. of West Troy N.Y. in souvenir of their ancestors of Acadia."
