![]() Charlottetown sports columnist Bill Ledwell has been named the first Island winner of the Doug Gilbert Newspaper Sport Writer Award by the Sports Federation of Canada. The award is one of several to be presented at the annual McCain Sports Awards Dinner to be held at the Sheraton Centre Hotel in Toronto Friday, February 2, at which the federation will honour its winners in various categories, including athlete, team, administrator and media. Sport P.E.I., which submitted the nomination of Mr. Ledwell, received confirmation of his selection from the chairperson of the Canadian sports awards committee, Joyce Coffin of Ottawa. The veteran sportswriters said he "was very honoured at being named the winner of the award." Sport P.E.I. president Peter Sorensen expressed pleasure that the Island federation's candidate has been chosen. "It is indeed gratifying that the Sports Federation of Canada has recognized Bill's contribution to the Island's sports scene as a member of the media and as a volunteer over the years. "He is certainly a worthy recipient of this prestigious award and we are pleased as well that he is the first Island to be so honoured." Mr. Ledwell has been a columnist with the Evening Patriot newspaper for the past 30 years and its former sports editor, and has been involved, not only as a participant, but in various other capacities including as a coach, an official and an administrator . A founding member of Sport P.E.I., he served as a member of the selection committee of the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, and is chairman of the P.E.I. Sports Hall of Fame. His service to hockey was acknowledged earlier this year by the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association with the presentation of its Award of Merit. He has also served as a P.E.I. Canada Games mission staff member on several occassions, and was co-manager of the P.E.I. Winter Games in 1968-69. From the Charlottetown Evening Patriot newspaper. Mr. Ledwell has since passed away.
