| The first ice rink was opened in Souris, in 1894. It was small and relied on naturally made ice. Artificial ice would not make an appearance in Souris until 71 years later. Souris had its first hockey star in 1902. Angus Lavie of the Souris Stars team was well known for dishing out body checks. A show card in the Hughes Drug Store window in Charlottetown stated "See Big Angus at Hillsboro Rink". ![]() Souris merchant Roy McLean coached a girl's hockey team in 1903. One of the players, Adele Sterns, later becomes his wife.
The Teddies won the first Souris Hockey Championship and the Tip Top Tailors Trophy, in 1934. The trophy was played for continously until 1952. Over 500 people attended the annual Souris Ice Carnival in February 1963. MC for the occasion was William Acorn. Artificial ice came to Souris with the re-opening of the Souris Rink on December 30, 1967. N.H.L. All Star and Stanley Cup winner goalie Jacques Plante visited Souris on January 12, 1968. He was the guest speaker at the 1st. Annual Sportsman's Dinner which is held at the High School. Proceeds were in support of the Eastern Kings Arena Association.
The Canada Games came to Souris in February 1991. One hockey game and several ringette matches brought large and appreciative crowds out for Souris' part in one of the most successful Games ever held.
![]() Souris River's Kelsey O'Donnell lead Prince Edward Island to a silver medal at the Canadian Women's Hockey Championships in 2008. She was awarded a Game Star, named the Top Forward and was named the Most Valuable Player for the tournament. Copyright Waldron H. Leard |
