Acorn

Dr. Milton Acorn was born at Charlottetown, P.E.I. in 1923 He was a Soldier and a Poet. His great-grandfather resided and operated a sawmill in Souris. Milton also worked at many other occupations. He was severely wounded during World War II. He used his writing talents to write and publish his poetry and he is remembered in Canada today as The People's Poet. He died at Charlottetown in 1986.

Acorn

William A. "Bill" Acorn was born at Souris in 1915. He was a Merchant and an Automobile Salesman. He was elected to the P.E.I. Legislative Assembly in 1951, 1955 and 1965. He was defeated in the general elections of 1959 and 1962. Mr. Acorn was a candidate for 1st. Kings in the 1966 General Election when he died suddenly in the middle of the campaign at his home. It was his death the led to a subsequent deferred vote in the district. The rest of the province continued the election and was tied 15-15. The deferred campaign saw some intense campaigning for who would win would be the government for the province.

Andy Cameron is an Athlete, a Coach and a Sports Administrator. He came to Charlottetown, when he was young and became an oustanding soccer player. He played for the U.P.E.I. and was a member for the Canadian Olympic Team in 1980-81. He took many courses in the game and has been the Technical Director of the Prince Edward Island Soccer Association, the Newfoundland Soccer Association, two Association's in Alberta and in New Brunswick. He also coached several University, Canada Games and Provincial Youth teams. Mr. Cameron also was a Staff Coach for the Canadian World Cup Men's Team in December 1992 at a game in Hamilton, Bermuda. Andy spent a year and a half in Souris in 1988 and 1989, assisting in the sports development, as a member of the Souris Lamplighters Club.

Campion

The Hon. John Francis Campion (1848-1916) was born at Souris in 1848. He was a member of the United States Navy (during the Civil War), a Miner, a Trader, an Entrepreneur, a Business Executive and a Philanthropist. He had silver mining interests in California, Nevada and Colorado. He sold those interests and returned in the late 1870's and was successful in being elected to the Prince Edward Island Legislative Council in a bye-election. Shortly afterwards he returned to Leadville, Colorado and developed the Little Jonny Mine. Later he was successful in developing the sugar beet industry. He was a director and stockholder in several banks and held business interests in a railway, land, cattle and electric light companies in Leadville, St. Louis and Salt Lake City. At his death at Denver in 1916, he was considered to be one of the richest citizens of the United States. His mother is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Souris.

Three Souris families, the Cheverie's, Creamer's and MacIntyre's breathed a sigh of relief at the end of World War II in 1945. All three contributed six sons apiece to the war effort, all saw action overseas and all 18 survived the hostilities.

The Hon. James J. Hughes (1856-1941) was a prominent Souris businessman and politician. He was Souris' first mayor. Hughes served as a Member of Parliament and as a member of the Senate of Canada.

Joyce

Carlton S. Joyce was born at Montreal. He is descended from the Carlton family of Souris. He was an Application Spectroscopist and an Executive and is now an Author and a War Historian specializing in the Normandy Campaign of 1944. He has 12 technology publications and several patents. He was stimulated and supported in his history interest by the late President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He owns an extensive militaria collection. Currently Mr. Joyce leads exclusive tours through the Normandy Battlefields in France.

Kassners

Dr. Edward Kassner was born in Vienna Austria, in 1909. He commenced practice in Souris on November 26, 1948. He continued serving the area until his retirement on August 27, 1977. In December 1962, he was the subject of the cover story in Canadian Doctor. The photo is of Dr. & Mrs. Kassner taking a tour of the new Souris Hospital in 1988. He died in 1999 at Charlottetown.

Melvyn Knight was born at Beaverlodge, Alberta. He is a descendant of John Knight, founder of Souris. He is an Instrument Mechanic, a Farmer and a Businessman. He worked for many years in petroleum and energey sector service companies. He also served as President and Coach of a a senior hockey team. He was elected in 2001 as a Member of the Alberta Legislative Assembly for Grande Prairie-Smoky. In 2007 he was named Minister of Energy.

Leard

George Artemas Leard was a merchant, writer, historian and ancestral researcher. He was born in Souris in 1908 and was educated here. He developed his love of history when he became ill as a teenager. He wrote books, Historic Bedeque, Saints and Sinners and Claws, Tales & Tomally. He also wrote articles as E.S.D. He collected drawers and drawers of material and it can be found on microfilm as the Leard Papers at the Public Archives in Charlottetown. He died in his hometown in 1967.

Leard

John Russell Leard was born in Souris in 1904. He a teacher, school principal, accountant and a senior civil servant with the Federal and Provincial Governments. He served as Chief Tax Assessor for Canada. His interest in history was a quiet preservation of materials for others in the future to use. He passed away in 1993 in Charlottetown.

Leard

Raymond Ayers "Ray" Leard was a merchant and a historian. He was born in Souris in 1912 and was interested in collecting artifacts and displaying them for all to see. His major interest was a very large collection of old photos, for which he received an award from Governor-General Leger. He served two terms as Mayor of Souris. Ray died in the Souris Hospital in 1981.

MacDonald

Dr. Augustine A. MacDonald (1874-1970) was born at St. Andrews, P.E.I. in 1874. He was a Physician and a Surgeon. He studied medicine at McGill University and practiced briefly in Boston before making Souris, P.E.I. his home. He was a famous doctor who delivered many babies and did many surgeries. A lot of operations were on people's kitchen tables by lamplight. The most famous one was when he sewed on a seven year old boy's feet, after they were almost cut off by a hay mower. He was a Member and a Speaker of the P.E.I. Legislative Assembly and served in the Cabinet. Dr. MacDonald was best known as Dr. Gus and was a Member of the Order of Canada. He died at Souris in 1970.

MacDonald

Souris native and C.F.C.Y. program director L. Art MacDonald (top left) passed away in Charlottetown in 1950. MacDonald is credited with introducing the Don Messer band to the airwaves, which eventually led to one of the most popular nationwide television series in Canadian history. His remains were returned to Souris and interred in St. Mary's Cemetery.

MacDonald

Souris teacher and resident Tommy Joe MacDonald was the first person from the area to compete in and finish the Boston Marathon. He accomplished this feat in 1988 and 1989.

MacKinnon

Lt. Col. Daniel A. Colonel Dan MacKinnon was born at Charlottetown in 1876. He was a Soldier, a Pharmacist, a Fox Rancher and Fur Merchant, a Harness Racing Driver, a Columnist and a Newspaper Owner and Publisher. He spent several of his teenaged years residing in Souris. He had a paper route through the town, which he ran each day. He won his first ice-skating race at the age of 14 in the Souris Rink. He is credited with making P.E.I. the Kentucky of Canada and was known as the Father of Harness Racing in Eastern Canada. He set a World Record in a race in 1923 at Mt. Clemens, Michigan. He was a founder of the United States Trotting Association. He is one of two Islanders to be a Member of the Canadian Sport Hall of Fame. Lt. Col. MacKinnon was awarded a Distinguished Service Order by King George V and the Croix de Guerre by the President of France. He died at Charlottetown in 1964.

McLean

Souris businessman, the Hon. John McLean passed away on Feb. 20, 1936. In addition to his extensive business interests, he served as a Member of the P.E.I. Legislative Assembly and in the Cabinet. He was also elected for a term as a Member of Parliament. In 1915, he was called to the Canadian Senate by Prime Minister Borden.

Nora McLean (1923-1985) was a remarkable individual, who overcame a serious disability to have a fulfilling life.

Millar

Ian Millar equestrian rider, trainer, coach & Olympic medalist is a grandson of Dr. Fred MacDonald who served the community as a Vetenarian and his wife Ella, a descendant of the Matthew family of the firm Matthew & McLean's. Miller is the most successful competitor in the history of Canadian show jumping. He has won well over 100 titles in his career. He has been an Olympian seven times, a Canadian record. He has his greatest success with Big Ben. Mr. Millar and Big Ben were inducted in the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. Among many other awards, he was presented the Order of Canada in 1986.

Muttart

Dr. Ephraim Bell Muttart (1839-1912) was born in Cape Traverse in 1839. After his graduation from Harvard University, he practiced medicine in Souris, from his home on Chapel Street. He served one term as Member of Parliament for Kings 1878 to 1882. He was also Kings County Coroner and a Medical Referee for an Insurance Company. He died at Souris in 1912.

Carol Ann Power was the first baby born in the new Souris Hospital on December 11, 1945. Other siblings joined her over the next few years. Three of them became doctors. Seventeen years later, Carol was named the first Queen of the Sea in the revived Souris Regatta.

Reed

Souris native, E. Jean (McLean) Reed, a respected Nurse and Nursing Sister, designed and wove the Island Tartan in the late 1950's. The story of the Island Tartan may be found here.

The remains of Souris native Msgr. Richard R. St. John (1895-1954) were interred in St. Mary's Cemetery in Souris on February 27, 1954. He was Vice-President and General Secretary of the Catholic Extension Society with his office situated in Chicago.

Hazel Leah Sterns (1887-1977) was born in Souris in 1887. She was a Teacher, a Social Worker and a Dietician. She worked at the Chalmers Settlement House in Montreal, Quebec, the Dept. of Education in Saskatchewan and the Stephen Gales Memorial Hospital in Haverhill, Massachusetts prior to her return to P.E.I. She was the first dietician on Prince Edward Island and worked at the Provincial Sanitorium. Miss Sterns was also a founding member and supervisor of the Women's Institutes in P.E.I. She died at Charlottetown in 1977.

Trainor

Weston T. "Bucko" Trainor was born at Charlottetown in 1922. As a boy he lived in Souris, while he was father was stationed with the police here. His mother was a Shea from the area. He was an Athlete, a Coach and an Arena Manager. He played ice hockey with the Maritime champion Charlottetown Junior Royals which came close to winning the Memorial Cup in 1938. He advanced to the senior ranks playing with Drummondville, Quebec and Moncton, N.B. His professional career begain with the St. Paul Saints of the U.S.H.L. and the New York Rangers of the N.H.L. He returned to Charlottetown after a knee injury and later coached senior hockey where he directed teams that won many championships. Mr. Trainor's last position was as the long-serving manager of the Charlottetown Forum. He died at Charlottetown in 1991.

Wood

Richard Wood was born in Charlottetown. He is a Fiddler, a Step Dancer a Composer and a Performing Artist. He was won many awards as a step dancer and a fiddler. He has performed on many stages and in many festivals throughout the world including an event in Japan for the Emperor and the Crown Prince. He has appeared on David Letterman and Good Morning America with Shania Twain, at Carnegie Hall with the Chieftains on St. Patrick's Day, 2001. He also appeared with Jean Butler of Riverdance on C.B.C.'s Celtic Electric. His father attended Souris High School and his mother is descended from Lutz family from the area.
