MacDonalds of Prince Edward Island part I

MacDonaldThis is a WORK IN PROGRESS. EVERYTHING is subject to CHANGE. These pages are meant to be a guide only. The MacDonald pages were updated October 15, 2003.

Due to a flood of response (thanks) and an ONGOING e-mail glitch, we were backlogged with e-mail's. There was only one person working on this project in 2003. Please be patient. These pages were in the midst of revision by a fellow researcher. Unfortunately, she chose not to continue. The original html's are back on-line. The zipped files are not ready at this time. Initial deadlines, set the fall of 2002, cannot be met.

If ye ain't a MacDonald, yer married to one

If ye ain't descended from one, yer marrried to one

If ye ain't married to one, yer spouse is descended from one

If ye ain't descended from one, yer related to one

If ye ain't related to one, yer friends with one

If ye ain't friends with one, ya can't be from here

PisquidProbably the most difficult name for people to research on Prince Edward Island is MacDonald. Over time, the History Room is attempting to sort out the different emigrations and family blocks. We are not nuts, we are just trying to help people. There is no profit in this for us and we will not be writing a book.

We are trying to find most of the separate emigations to P.E.I. To sort them out, we have to give each family nicknames. Some of them are already known. Each one must be different. We have made some of them up and are for our use but you may use them too. These are not perfect and are subject to change and we will try to keep this page updated as best as we can.

We are finding that almost as many MacDonald women married to other surnames (MacEachern, MacLeod, Martin etc.), also emigrated. We have chosen not to try to figure that out at this time.

Once the blocks are sorted out, they will be placed on the Island Register, hopefully in the spring. Please follow this link Island Register MacDonald Index Page to see what is already there. We are an Island and to get here, people had to come by boat. You can find some Passenger Lists here. Only a few of the MacDonalds came on the Alexander, but the Glenaladale Links Page on the Island Register may be able to help you. 2002 was the 200th. Anniversary of the arrival of the Skye Pioneers. Some of the MacDonald's came then. Information on the festivities can be found here.

We use Brother's Keeper as a genealogy program. The last number on the end is the number's in our database. The symbol + designates the group came to P.E.I. as members of the Roman Catholic religion.

These three brothers from the Panmure branch, served the colony and province of Prince Edward Island and later their country, Canada as politicians. They were the sons, nephews and cousins of MacDonald politicians. Their story is very interesting and may be found in the Fall/Winter 2002 issue of The Island Magazine within an article entitled Political Relations. The Island Magazine is available at bookstores and newstands on the Island or by clicking on the P.E.I. Museum logo on the left.

MacDonald Fact: Out of all the emigration's to Prince Edward Island, 54% of the families worshipped in the Roman Catholic Church, while 46% were of the different protestant faiths, predominately Presbyterian.

We, with the assistance of others, have come up the following emigrations to P.E.I. Click on the Emigrant Page.
