Introduction . . .

This area was named for Angus Campbell, a resident here, when the area was surveyed in 1808. There was a post office here from 1896 to 1913.

A brief history . . .

Cartier

Jacques Cartier was the first recorded European to explore Prince Edward Island in 1534. He is believed to have seen Campbell's Point first from the sea, but made his first landfall near the Alberton area.

Prince Edward Island appears on Samuel de Champlain's map of Cape Breton as Isle Saint-Jean.

The first settlers included the Campbell's and the MacIntyre's.

The first Scottish Catholic Cemetery in the area was established here in the late 1700's. It was used until a new cemetery was established in Fairfield in the early 1800's.

C. C. Carlton of Souris had the first lobster factory here, before 1880. There were later to be three, as well as a small breakwater, which gave some protection. This factory was used as a fish-stand as well to buy mackerel.

A rogue wave capsized the Lunenburg fishing schooner Welcome off Campbell's Cove on August 10, 1883. Nine men were drowned; one survivor clung to the rigging for a night and a day before being rescued. The late Adele Townshend wrote an article for the Island Magazine, entitled The Loss of the Welcome.

Aeneas P. Campbell built his first vessel at the shipyard here in 1912. It was named the Aeneas P.

Sylvaneus MacAulay won the World Championship in Seed Potatoes in 1955 and the World Championship in Table-Stock potatoes in 1955 and 1956 at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. In recognition of his achievements, Syl was awared a trip to Holland Marsh Farms in Ontario. He was also honoured at a special Rotary luncheon at the Charlottetown Hotel, as well as his friends and neighbours who assembled at his home one evening later. At the time, it was believed to be the highest honour ever achieved by Prince Edward Island for any agricultural exhibit.

Anne Bernadette MacAulay of Campbell's Cove was the first 4-H Club member to win the world seed potato championship at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto in 1962. Her father Sylvaneus was the first Islander to win the title.

The Campbell's Cove Provincial Park was officially opened in 1963.

A freak weather phenomenon occured in March 1991 at Campbell's Cove. Local residents looking to the north-east could see the Magadalen Islands, 75 miles away. It was determined that they were seeing a reflected image off open water and heavy pack ice on a bright clear night.

Interesting individuals associated with the community . . .

Sylvanus MacAulay (1901-1986) Farmer, Park Warden and World Champion Seed and Table-stock Potato Champion resided and farmed here.
