The newly established post office, Bothwell, was named by Joseph MacVane. The name is for the situation of
both himself and his father living
well, side by side. It appears on a map in 1863. There was a post office here from 1863-1913. There is a Bothwell Castle east of Glasgow in Scotland.
A brief history . . .
Sailing boats were built by Joseph MacVane in a shipyard situated to the south of the present day mill dam. Capt. James Young supervised their construction. The first vessel built was the James and the second Annie Elsie. Young sailed the vessels to the West Indies and traded in molasses and sugar.Bothwell merchant J. F. Mossey put a peddling wagon on the road in 1902, traveling a route in Eastern Kings, six days a week from May to December.
