The postman brought a letter 'Twas postmarked P.E.I., My historic native province Under an eastern sky.It told of friends and kin folk, Of the weather that was fair, Of the annual summer picnic And the tourists that were there. Bessie wrote that the old school house That crested the Red Point hill Had been moved from its foundation Now ever its ghost was still. They moved it in the springtime South and eastward down the lane. It will not grace the hilltop As a landmark there again. | Sixty years ago a teacher young I taught the children there Fond memories of those youngsters I'll ever with you share.Memories of the wood stove That the older boys did stoke The outdoor privy, the double desks, And the chalk that always broke. The school is gone upon the hill I'll wipe a tear away But smile for the old memories Of wonderful kids it brings to me today. - Mabel (Grant) Braidwood, was born in Charlottetown. Her roots were in Lakeville. She died in Subury, Ontario in 1998.
