The Lily Pond

The Lily Pond - July 22, 2005

The Lily Pond on the Baltic Road attracts the attention of motorists and cyclists in the summer months.

Nature was assisted in the development of a beautiful mass of colour by the innovative and creative Mrs. Tena Campbell. This pond is located on the north side of the ancestral Campbell property. It had been dug out by area farmers supplying a rich black mud that served as a form of fertilizer.

Mrs. Campbell had a love for flowers and developed gardens surrounding the farm home. She was also an avid reader, always open to new ideas. When the mud was all excavated, Mrs. Campbell felt she could improve the general of the property by developing a lily pond. She purchased a few of the plants from the Experimental Farm in Charlottetown. The bulbs were placed in bottomless potato baskets and set it in the bottom of the pond. The bulbs eventually became embedded in the mud.

The Water Lily is a flowering aquatic plant of the genus Castalia. The beautiful white and pink blossoms float on the surface of the water and the blossoms rest on a pad or cushion of green leaves.

From the original bulbs planted in'the late 20's, they expanded to cover most of the surface of the pond.

The pond is bordered on three sides by a stand of trees. Easily visible from the highway, with signage, it is a memorial to a well known environmentalist of her time. Other ponds may be found in Bear River and Dingwells Mills.
